“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” The truthfulness of this quote from Simon Sinek’s presentation keeps ringing in my ears. Why do people follow? What qualities do excellent leaders exemplify that set them apart from the rest? How does a leader communicate the “why” or driving force behind their leadership without coercion? Is my “why” a good enough reason for people to want to follow me and if so, how am I going to communicate that to people? Who are the best examples of leadership in my life?

Why do people follow? The easy answer is because they want too. What Sinek tries to get us to see is that there are specific reasons why people follow certain leaders over others? For me, I follow people who exemplify the core beliefs that I already know to be true. This could be integrity, honesty, a strong work ethic, etc. I also follow people who are teaching me to be a better person because of their example. I just completed my internship with the superintendent of my district and he is an excellent leader who models correct principles and leads by example. By following him, I have become a better leader. Finally, I follow others who demonstrate that they care about my progress in life and act in ways that help me to become a better person.

How does a leader communicate the “why” or driving force behind their leadership without coercion? Sinek says it’s in all the little things we do. Leaders

communicate integrity by acting with integrity. They communicate honesty, care, and concern by being truthful and taking the time to build relationships with other. Leaders must demonstrate their “why” in word and deed. I truly believe that actions speak louder than words.

The best examples of leadership in my life have been the people who walk the walk. They lead by example and are 100% genuine and humble doing it. They act with integrity and make decisions based on what is right and not based on what is easy. Their “why” is visible and yet sometimes intangible but I know it’s there and I know that by following them I will be a better person.
